Fifth Grade Learning Objectives:

Language Arts

Your student will:

  • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area.

  • Summarize a text.

  • Determine main ideas and key details of a text.

  • Write narratives, informative/explanatory texts, and opinion pieces.

  • Use writing traits: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.

  • Use the writing process: drafting, editing/revising, publishing.

  • Use correct conventions in all writing (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, verb tenses).

  • Engage in discussions

 

Math

Your student will:

  • Read, write, order, and compare whole numbers through billions and decimals to thousandths.

  • Add and subtract decimals through thousandths.

  • Recall multiplication and division facts.

  • Multiply 2-digit numbers.

  • Read, write, order, and compare fractions.

  • Identify polygons.

  • Use and convert customary/metric measures.

  • Collect, interpret, and display data.

 

Science

Your student will:

  • Use the scientific method and develop critical thinking skills.

  • Identify and describe the parts of plant and animal cells.

  • Compare and contrast elements, compounds, and physical/chemical changes.

  • Describe the process of photosynthesis.

  • Understand the rock cycle.

  • Describe the physical and mental effects of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.

 

Social Studies

  • Your student will:

  • Extend knowledge of map skills.

  • Describe the impact of early European explorers.

  • Identify and describe the 13 colonies.

  • Explain how the United States formed.

  • Recall the 50 states and capitals.
